Nashville Disease Prevalence and Risk Factor Statistics

This page contains local statistics from Metropolitan Health Department of Nashville and Davidson County.

The difference in death rates is most striking for diabetes.  Tennessee mortality rate data from 2001-2003 shows that African American death rates due to diabetes are nearly twice that of whites in the state of Tennessee and in Davidson County.  In addition, it is apparent that African American females living in Davidson Country have the highest death rate from diabetes compared to African Americans and whites of both sexes living in the state of Tennessee.

Modifiable risk factors in Nashville were assessed in 2001-2004 through a telephone survey. Results show that North Nashville African American rates are higher than white rates for Davidson County with the exception of the African American female smoking rate.  Overall, the North Nashville rates are higher than the Tennessee African American rates.  The data also shows that while there are more overweight African Americans in North Nashville than in Tennessee, there are significantly more overweight African American females than African American males in North Nashville.  In addition, African American diabetes rates in North Nashville for males and females are much higher than those of Whites in Davidson County or in Tennessee.
