Community Need and Priority AreaNorth Nashville is a diverse area that has two historically black universities (TSU and Fisk), an historically black medical college (Meharry), and a modern office and distribution park. In addition, historically, more than 1/3 of Davidson County's public housing units were located in North Nashville. (It covers approximately 77.5 sq miles.)North Nashville remains the county's most economically depressed area. One fifth of the families live in public housing, and unemployment is higher than any other area of the county. And the overall health status of North Nashville's residents is much worse than for the county as a whole and worse than all but one of Davidson County's other public health planning districts (the small population of mostly homeless persons living in Downtown Nashville). In a 1996 ranking of the county's 14 public health planning districts, North Nashville ranked last on socio-economic indicators, last on behavioral health risk factors, next to last on indicators relating to birth, next to last on premature mortality, and next to last on communicable diseases.
